Role: Head Chef
Location: Wigan, UK
Salary: up to £55,000
Working Schedule: Permanent Position, 37.5 hours per week
Reports To: Head of Operations
Overview and Opportunity
The Head Chef leads all culinary operations, delivering high-quality, performance-focused meals for players, staff, and guests. This key role supports the nutritional demands of athletes and requires expertise in kitchen management, budget control, and sports nutrition.
Role Responsibilities
Meal Provision & Sports Nutrition:
- Design, prepare, and deliver meals tailored to the performance and recovery needs of players, including breakfast, lunch, snacks, and pre/post-match meals.
- Collaborate closely with the club’s performance and medical teams to develop menus that support athletic performance and overall health.
- Accommodate individual dietary needs, including allergies, intolerance’s, and cultural or religious considerations.
- Oversee food provision for staff, and events.
- Maintain strict compliance with HACCP procedures and all relevant UK food safety standards.
Budget & Cost Control:
- Manage the kitchen budget, ensuring efficient use of resources without compromising meal quality.
- Track spending, reduce waste, and implement cost-saving strategies.
- Prepare regular financial reports, comparing actual costs against budget forecasts.
Procurement & Stock Management:
- Source high-quality, nutritionally valuable ingredients from trusted suppliers.
- Maintain accurate inventory records, ensuring adequate stock levels and minimising waste.
- Negotiate with suppliers to obtain competitive pricing and build long-term partnerships.
- Implement proper storage and stock rotation procedures (FIFO).
Kitchen Leadership & Staff Management:
- Lead and supervise kitchen staff, ensuring excellence in food preparation and service.
- Develop staff rotas, including coverage for special events.
- Train and mentor team members on food safety, nutrition, and operational standards.
- Uphold health & safety regulations, including allergen protocols and hygiene audits.
Match Day & Event Catering:
- Coordinate catering for home and away fixtures, including travel meals for players and staff.
- Manage hospitality catering for VIPs, sponsors, and corporate guests.
- Oversee the preparation and distribution of post-match recovery meals and supplements.
Candidate Requirements
- Demonstrated experience as a senior chef, preferably in a high-performance or elite sports environment.
- In-depth understanding of sports nutrition and athlete dietary requirements.
- Strong skills in budgeting, cost control, and kitchen financial management.
- Proven experience in stock management and supplier negotiations.
- Level 3 Food Hygiene & Safety certification (or equivalent).
- Effective leadership skills and the ability to thrive under pressure in a dynamic environment.
